Kidsgrove Flag

Kidsgrove Flag

by Adrian Thomas,  Flag designer, 9 January 2003

The above design was adopted in October 2002 by Kidsgrove Council after many various other designs were considered. The flag consists of two horizontal bands. The top band is blue and represents the sky and water in the Trent and Mersey Canal (although the water has never been blue) that runs through the town and today brings mainly visitors.  The green is representative of the GROVE as in the name of the town. The crest has the Staffordshire Knot for the county of Staffordshire.  The Second World War Spitfire Fighter Plane designed by Reginald Mitchell, a Kidsgrove Native and legend is also shown. The lower part of the crest has goats (kids) in a grove hence the name Kidsgrove and in the year of 1895 numerous small villages became unified into one town.
Located in the top left canton is the Union Flag for the United Kingdom. The dimensions of the official made in fine quality fabric flag is 6' x 3'6" but is also available in polyester copies measuring  5' x 3'.
The flag will be flown at the Town Hall for special events and may even be flown by local business',  football clubs, scout facilities and private residences in the town.
I brought the idea to Kidsgrove Council after noticing that many European towns and cities have flags of their own. The council agreed to the idea and asked that I summit some designs. After some deliberation, they chose the above design.

Kidsgrove is situated on the border of Cheshire and the most northern part of Staffordshire. Because of this, I felt a flag of our own would provide Kidsgrove with its own identity.
